I wanted to quickly share the birthday cake I made for my son’s 5th birthday last weekend. I am by no means a great cake decorator! But I try, and I loved how excited my kiddo got when he knew Mommy was making his birthday cake! That makes it worth it! So here it is…
I was pretty happy with how it turned out! The birthday boy sure was excited and that’s what counts!
The cake recipe I use is FABULOUS!!! It is a wedding cake recipe using a doctored up box mix I found on Pinterest! I have a link to the recipe below. It comes from Recipe Girl. It is a recipe for cupcakes, but works just as well as a regular cake. It is such a moist and delicious recipe!
Special Notes:
-For this rocket ship cake, I made two 13 x 9 cakes, layered them, and then cut out the rocket shape. See below for a link on how to do this.
-I added 1 tsp of almond flavoring to each cake.
-I baked the cakes at 325 degrees and started checking for doneness with a toothpick at 30 minutes. In my oven, it took about 40 minutes.
-I used a Wilton basic buttercream recipe (but I’m in the market for a new recipe).
– I used peach rings candies for the rocket boosters and sparkler candles for a nice effect, and finally red M&M’s for the number 5.
-I found a great picture tutorial for making the shape of the cake. See below.

When you made the rocket cake in 2 9×13 pans, was that one recipe or did you double it?

Hi Mary! I doubled the recipe!
