This homemade shake was soooo good! My kids loved it! I made the simple fruit base in the afternoon, chilled it, and after supper we made our shakes. They are super easy. The recipe comes from Bobby’s Burger Palace ( a Bobby Flay restaurant).
Recipe: Adapted from Bobby Flay’s Burgers, Fries, and Shakes (such an awesome cookbook)
Begin by making the strawberry fruit base:
-1 pound fresh strawberries (hulled)
-3 to 6 tbsp of sugar depending on the sweetness of the berries
-3 tbsp of strawberry jam
-juice of half a lemon
Mix berries with 3 tbsp of sugar. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
In a small saucepan, mix berries and jam. Cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes. Begin mashing and cooking berries for another 15 minutes. Remove from heat and add lemon juice. Taste and add more sugar if needed.(I only used 3 tbsp-the actual recipe calls for 4 to 6). Transfer to a bowl and allow to cool. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to 24 hours. Can be frozen in portions for up to 6 months. Defrost in refrigerator overnight before using.
*We used half of it one night and the other half the next night because they were so good!
For shakes:
1/2-3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup strawberry fruit base
10 oz. premium vanilla ice cream (We actually just filled the blender a little over half-way with ice cream).
Fresh whipped cream
Combine all of the ingredients beginning with 1/2 cup milk. Add more milk depending on how thick you like your shakes. Pour in a glass and top with whipped cream. Enjoy!
Fresh Whipped Cream:
1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Beat cream, sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. Store in refrigerator.
